This marvel of technology hangs in the GDR Museum in the Harz Mountains – an analogue telephone. One that had to be ordered years in advance. It probably hung in a police station or a Stasi office.

In principle, the museum in the town of Thale is worth a visit, even if you didn't spend your childhood in this country. As someone who did, I can say that what is on display there was really our everyday life.

Hotel Sakartvelo. One of many abandoned resort buildings scattered across the spa town of Tskaltubo in western Georgia. Once part of a busy Soviet-era holiday industry, the hotel is now an empty shell of concrete and broken stairwells.

To capture this shot, I was perched (uneasily) on a matching staircase on the other side of this lobby. Needless to say, I was relieved to step back onto solid ground again!

Gravitational waves

A vibrant, multi-colored wooden bench partially covered in fresh snow. The bench features horizontal slats painted in the colors of the rainbow, creating a striking contrast against the white snow. On the upper slats, the snow has begun to slide, forming elegant, wave-like curves and "ribbons" rather than a solid blanket. A rainbow bench is a bench in a public space that is painted in the colors of the rainbow flag of the LGBT+ movement. Its function is similar to that of a rainbow crosswalk.

Silver Leaf fungus

Purple bracket fungi growing along the bark of a tree. The composition is split almost vertically, creating a beautiful juxtaposition between the rough, dark wood and the delicate, organic shapes of the fungi. The right side of the frame is densely packed with hundreds of small, shelf-like fungal caps. They feature ruffled, wavy edges with a vibrant purple-to-violet hue, fading into a crisp white or light grey at the very tips. The left side reveals the tree's surface, a deep, earthy brown with a rugged, fissured texture. The bark's vertical ridges provide a strong textural contrast to the soft, overlapping layers of the mushrooms.

Ein in Eis eingeschlossenes Blatt im Gartenteich. Das Eis bildet die Umrisse und Blattadern mit hellen Linien nach, das Blatt selbst ist kaum erkennbar. Nur der braunrote Stengel lugt durch ein kleines Loch im Eis heraus.

Collage of 16 similar but vastly different tops of concrete posts. All have some degree of, or a complete lack of, a mix of a warm ochre coloured lichen (called egg yolk moss in Dutch), light arsenic blue lichen (kerbstone finger moss in Dutch), a few others i can't identify, and one has a clump of a small real moss (which, goes by Mouse moss) in completely random patterns. There's also a smattering of gravel bits in the concrete visible. It looks like war between two areas with the two strongly different coloured colonies. Good world maps.

A while ago I posted about the legendary glasses from France, and how the workers, facing possible bankruptcy, decided to turn it into a cooperative rather than accept being sold to investors that wanted to fire a third of the people. Well. They grew their revenue by 22% and plan to break even in 2027. They crowdfunded emergency funding, planned to be €5M which they had to stop when €20M was pledged within 48 hours. YES!
